A few weekends ago I went out for a little thrift shopping sans child. Papa was in charge of the child minding which included some bicycling, playing in the yard and my little guy getting to use some of Papa's grown up tools for house maintenance ..fun times! When I returned home I received the lovely details of the day and was informed that my Pear loving little boy, whom I have made much effort to love his fruits ..did not eat his afternoon Pear snack! hmmm ..I did a quick rundown of my fruit stock for that week and remembered that the lovely pear in my fruit bowl was getting to be not-so-lovely ..you know, when pears are at their peak, they have a beautiful colour tone and are irresistibly juicy ..as opposed to when they are getting on a bit and turn grainy ..mushy ..rubbery ..BlAH!
*..and here is the important lesson that I needed to learn* A few days after he had the Yuck! Pear snack I offered him a lovely fresh Pear and he refused it ..he remembered the last experience and was not willing to take any chances! In the past I may have stressed over this but I am so thankful now to have seen this little connection to help me understand how truly important taste is and the amazing memory of it! I did re-introduce Pear a week later after some time had passed ..and it was beautiful and lovely fresh ..and he ate it up ..Ok, back on track!
Here are some tips I have stumbled over but now find of the utmost importance
-as I am now purchasing more fruit when I buy my weeks worth to be included in his daily snack and meals I must purchase a combination of ripe and not-quite ripened so that by the end of the week I don't end up with an army of over-ripe fruits .. a simple detail that I needed to be more mindful of
-If I end up with some overripe fruit I will end its misery and chop it up for the freezer for smoothies -or- into a quick and easy fruit compote
-buying my weeks worth of fruit I pre-plan to always offer something different everyday for his snack no re-runs ..he never knows what he will get but he knows it will be Good! [unless of course I forget and leave Papa overripe fruit again to feed him for a snack Oooops!]
