Over the course about 2-3 weeks during the Springtime our meals and appetites and stamina were a bit all over the place as Mom and Son were both sick. And within this short time period a few little events took place that were quite exciting. As I have mentioned in some of my previous posts my little guy has continued to pick up large bunches of raw broccoli and sneak a few little nibbles here and there! most recently he did it the week when I was sick in bed and Papa was kindly taking over dinner .. supposedly he told Papa that he "Loves Broccoli" and it is "delicious" ..
Another great moment was also on a day that I was sick .. it was at about 3pm our usual snack time .. and my little boy who had been sick the week previously and hadn't eaten much was now finding himself with a full monstrous appetite ready to devour whatever came across his path. This may sound like a great opportunity for a mother who is working hard to challenge her little boys tastes .. and yes in fact it was! .. the only problem was that this mother was the one who was now sick and had let the cupboards and refrigerator and freezer all become bare! No food! No grand ideas to challenge my little boys tastes .. no energy no mama will power ....Nothing.
.. This is just when I found after a foggy brained search in my pantry a package stashed away of my favorite dried sesame seaweed snacks. I was desperate to appease my little boys need for his afternoon snack so I figured I would give it a go .. another one of those nothing to lose + I have nothing else to give him moments.
Well, he DE-Voured that package of seaweed .. I used my old trick of calling them yummy Crunchies .. a word that stirs his little excitement .. sure enough he went for it and even had a bit of a fit when he realized that we had no more dried seaweed for him to devour! actually he had a few little fits that day for more seaweed. It is truly a strange thing to have your little boy yelling at you with a very disrespectful tone "I WANT MORE SEAWEED!!!" .. whaaa??
I think a few things contributed to this great new little taste appreciation he has:
-firstly that he has taken an occasion tiny bite out of our Sushi rolls when we have it for dinner so I think he had a bit of that taste on his palate previously and it wasn't shockingly different ..
-he also does love toasted sesame seeds .. from his toasted bagels and this was how I got him to eat kale chips by covering them completely in sesame seeds before I baked them .. and the dried seaweed snacks had a nice coating of toasted sesame oil which give the seaweed a lovely taste..
-and mostly I think he had such an excellent appetite the day he tried it because he hadn't eated well for a week when he was sick .. he was just so happy to eat and taste .. and it in turn created a love affair with dried seaweed go figure!
We seem to have opened some new doors lately and although I seem to be just reusing a lot of my previous taste trial experiments strategies with new food tastes for my little boy .. we are steadily hitting a stride and I have so much more to share too!!!! very very soon! .. but today I am just so happy to focus on the Seaweed :)
