I have been pondering a few things about my sons appetite and ways I have worked with it. I have learned so much about the importance of allowing him to be hungry even if he has chosen to skip or hardly eat a meal out of displeasure with what is offered .. until it is the next mealtime and how often that has led him to eat or try something he normally would not have.
Having been raised in a cash poor household often without the normal 3 square meals a day that most children enjoy .. I can fully appreciate food and have this inner awe and thankfulness that I bring to every meal .. those times of hunger were hard but they taught me something. I know my son is not for want which is nice for him .. but with that has! to come an appreciation and respect and healthy attitude towards his meal that I have had to help him cultivate.. lest he come to expect pasta and bread all day everyday.
For a period of time my little guy wouldn't touch pizza .. which surprised me. Then Poof! one day he did like it and as I became overjoyed with this new meal interest of his I decided to take the reigns and pull him in by not having this new Pizza love start off with just the typical kids cheese pizza .. but to push the envelope a little and make sure his cheese pizza also had mushrooms under that cheese. Then I waited a while before I served him pizza .. and went a step further offering him a delicious spinach pizza from our favorite pizza place that sits in the woods. I made sure he had a good appetite that day by giving him an early breakfast a good long busy break from eating and then pushed his lunch a little later .. to my surprise he devoured his first spin ache pizza and it stuck! We enjoyed that spinach pizza quite a few times this summer in the middle of nature at our favorit pizza place .. after a good long hike .. good food .. special memories cultivated with Love.
