When I decided to start ignoring my little boys intense cheese refusals I knew I needed something or some way to just get him to taste the cheese and it occurred to me that the one food item that I struggled with him the most (the cracker) could be used instead in my favour as a vehicle ..to taste cheese!
My goal is to get him loving cheese so much that the cracker becomes only a small part of the equation ..easier said than done, I know! I started by purchasing a pack of little Paris Toasts ..which are small and a bit sweet so he could get the flavour of the cheese with a nice cracker that he enjoys. Since I have gotten bolder in my approach to training my sons taste buds I decided I would skip the conventional kids cheeses and go for broke! Camembert - Brie - Chèvre - Blue ..why not? since he wouldn't eat any cheese at all ..I have nothing to lose!
I think the most important key to get this to work was that I had stopped offering him crackers all together for snacks for a while before I attempted this trial so, he would be getting a bit of cracker ..which makes him very happy! I chose two cheeses for the first week of my trial to offer him that I would switch each day ...a Camembert and a semi firm local artisan cheese.
Looking back I still smile when I think about this process and how amazing to me it was that it worked. I now only offer one cracker and I am also able to spread the cheese a lot thicker and offer a few chunks on the side that he often goes for first! Amazing I say!
