We have a nice medium size mortar and pestle that we bought a few years ago from ikea. It has a ridged basin and a good weighted pestle which makes the crushing and grinding all that more enjoyable. I have let my little guy play around with it occasionally when he is up on his chair helping with the meals and have thrown in some dried thyme once or twice for him to crush. But it wasn't until the other day that I actually like Duh! realized how the mortar and pestle could be a perfect kitchen opportunity for a little -I love to smash things- boy.
He actually asked to use the mortar & pestle and then proceeded to rummaged through my pantry door which thankfully I had accidentally left open [which I usually have on lockdown] and pulled out my jar of coriander seeds handing them to me pronouncing "yeah that is a great idea mama!" Okay .. so as I was pondering just how did he know where to find the coriander seeds?!! .. it took me a few extra minutes to let it all sink in and then finally realized what "great idea" he was referring to!
Oh! and maybe I could even switch the pestle for a smooth rock for the crushing of seeds on a towel .. different tools different kinds of fun!
